Birdman ของ “อเลฮานโดร กอนซาเลซ อีนาร์รีตู” และ The Grand Budapest Hotel ของ “เวส แอนเดอร์สัน” คือผลงานที่ได้ชิงออสการ์ถึง 9 สาขา มากที่สุดสำหรับการมอบรางวัลในปีนี้ ส่วนหนังเต็ง Foxcatcher กลับไม่มีรายชื่อในสาขาหนังยอดเยี่ยม

โดยหนังทั้งสองเรื่องยังได้ชิงรางวัลใหญ่ภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยมร่วมกับหนังอีก 6 เรื่องได้แก่ American Sniper, Boyhood, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything และ Whiplash
       
ซึ่งผู้กำกับของหนังเหล่านี้ส่วนใหญ่ยังมีชื่อชิงรางวัลผู้กำกับยอดเยี่ยมด้วย ยกเว้นแค่ คลินต์ อีสต์วูด จาก American Sniper และ อวา ดูเวอร์นีย์ ผู้กำกับหนัง Selma เท่านั้น ที่ไม่ได้ลุ้นในสาขาผู้กำกับ
       
สำหรับรางวัลสาขานักแสดงนั้นเหล่าตัวเต็งก็มีชื่อชิงรางวัลกันแทบทุกคน แต่ก็ยังมีนักแสดงบางคนที่พลาดไปทั้ง เจค กิลเลนฮาล จาก Nightcrawler และ เจนนิเฟอร์ อนิสตัน จาก Cake
       
โดยผู้ผิดหวังสำหรับการประกาศรายชื่อครั้งนี้ก็ยังมีหนังดัง Foxcatcher ที่พลาดจากสาขาภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยมไปอย่างน่าเสียดาย แต่ก็ยังได้ลุ้นรางวัลในสาขาด้านการแสดง
       
นอกจากนั้น ที่ถือว่าเซอร์ไพรส์ก็คือสาขาภาพยนตร์อนิเมชั่นยอดเยี่ยมที่ The Lego Movie ที่ทั้งทำเงินมหาศาล และยังได้รับเสียงชื่นชมจากนักวิจารณ์แทบจะทุกสำนักกลับพลาดโอกาสเข้าชิงไปอย่างน่าเสียได้ แต่ในเวลาเดียวกัน ผลงานจากประเทศญี่ปุ่น Princess Kaguya ก็มีชื่อชิงรางวัลในสาขานี้ด้วย
       
โดยการประกาศรายชื่อผู้เข้าชิงรางวัลออสการ์ครั้งนี้มีผู้กำกับชื่อดัง เจ.เจ. อับรามส์, อัลฟองโซ กัวรอง, นักแสดงหนุ่ม คริส พาย และ เชอร์ลี บูน ไอแซคส์ รับหน้าที่อ่านรายชื่อทั้งหมดจากที่ Samuel Goldwyn Theater ในเบเวอร์ลีฮิลล์ส แคลิฟอร์เนีย ส่วนงานประกาศผลผู้ได้รับรางวัลจะมีขึ้นในวันที่ 22 ก.พ. 2015 ซึ่ง นีล แพททริค แฮร์ริส จะรับหน้าที่เป็นพิธีกร ส่วน ABC เป็นผู้ถ่ายทอดสดเช่นเดิม
